Leaping for Joy

My wife Linda writes about one of our trips to the Everglades: One adventure began in 1999 when our research took us to the Florida Everglades. The first trip was in Florida's backcountry, canoeing the Wilderness Waterway, a 99-mile route that runs along the wild western edge of Everglades National Park. I knew this trip would be a challenge when the Forest Ranger said, "Don't hang your feet or arms off the elevated platforms (chickees), we had an alligator attack last night". Cautiously pondering, we forged onward. In contrast to the Rangers warning, our thoughts were interrupted when ospreys glided by just as we floated past a tree on a small island covered with so many snowy egrets that for an instant I thought the branches were blooming with white leaves. Everywhere we looked, wildlife adorned the waterway and from our view, the sky engulfed the dome-like panorama. The endurance of canoeing open water, traveling all day from small mangrove islands to secluded narrow inlet passageways, to camp on remote chickees, was a journey we frequently enjoy reminiscing. After several months of sorting through the reference, Keith said we needed to make yet two more trips to the Glades. This time, with the help of an experienced guide, we were able to cover more area taking in the coast of Cape Sable, the southernmost point of the US mainland and mainland Florida. From around one bend of seeing mass gatherings of roseate spoonbills to leaping dolphins, his camera files were full. Our exploration of the coastal region of the Everglades was over. The snorkeling, swimming, camping and canoeing trip was complete; the fun stuff was done, now for the hard work...Keith began painting. By 2000 he completed, Bay Flight 40" x 30", Pelican Point 40" x 30", Spoonbill Inlet 60" x 40", Osprey Hunting 40" x 30" and Cape Sable 40" x 30". Just this year, 13 years later, he completed the last two paintings, Great White at the Edge of Night, a 72" x 48" oil where over 60 great white pelicans, a sprinkling of seagulls, terns, and skimmers adorn the coast of Florida and Leaping for Joy 57" x 37" a school of dolphins jumping in the Gulf of Mexico. We are happy to say that all these paintings have a happy home to hang in! ...read more
